To Protect Rights and Enhance Wellbeing of Worker Community by Tripartite Communication

  • Every day, in each part of the supply chain, factories, especially those labour-intensive ones are facing tons of issues. Workers, as indispensable "screws" of each factory, might need help when they encounter difficulties on social security, medical insurance, legal consultation, harassment, etc. Generally, grievance works.

However, when the internal grievance mechanism fails and there is no external one. They have to solve problems in extreme ways——It is nothing new in the history of the supply chains. All these can be avoided if plans are in hand. More and more brands regard the protection of human rights as part of their core competitiveness; More and more consumers focus on whether an enterprise is socially accountable; More and more factories with foresight regard wellbeing as an important factor in production efficiency. The shared value grows for the above. Based on our experience and reports, an effective non-judicial grievance mechanism can play a role as an early warning and resolve 80% crisis.

The non-judicial mechanism is a key engine of a sustainable supply chain.

  • Case 1

3 strikes held, brand D’s subsidiary workers still do not get their social insurance funds paid. When they turned to Handshake, anger and anxiety were in them. After collecting info from both workers and the factory, Handshake knew that there was a miscommunication gap between them. Numerous communicating and processing, finally, the factory made its promise to post an announcement for this and would make up payment on the omitted funds. Another strike dispelled.

    Case 2

“He was just like my 13-year-old boy!” The internal grievance mechanism did not work though she tried so many times. She was in the same workshop with this boy and was worried about more kids would enter the factory. Then, she turned to Handshake. Fortunately, the boy was 18 but with further investigation, a girl under 18 was found in another workshop. After Handshake’s intervention, the girl got her compensation and was back to her hometown living with her grandparents. Workers all shown their gratitude to the timely processing by factory and the strong assistance of Handshake.

“Handshake has already been our best friend now, will keep contact with them.” A worker said.
